After dying in drag race practice, Luo Haoliang and Lu Yiming meet a familiar-looking soul reaper Xiaowen. She is tasked to free all new souls, who are then trapped by Earth God. The CEO of the underworld drinks Mengpo soup mistakenly when confronted by Earth God. Xiaowen gets new orders to arrest all freed souls. She lets Yiming go but shoots Haoliang who pleads to return to the mortal world.
Haoliang realises Xiaowen was the teacher who died saving him. They acknowledge each other. She adopts three kids and recycles junk. Haoliang gives her items from home and lies about finding them on the streets. He befriends the kids. Hei and Bai trick the CEO into gazing into the mirror of past lives. They find out the underworld is overheating from overpopulation and may blow up anytime.
The CEO sends underworld residents to the mortal world as surveyors to ease the overpopulation. Yiming and his father nearly get killed by harassing souls. Jingjing sees Yiming’s soul leave his body and drags it back. Yiming awakes, delighted to see Jingjing whom he hasn’t contacted for five years. Jingjing refuses to stay in touch. Xiaowen arrives to bring a shocked Yiming to the underworld.
An upset Yiming realises Jingjing died five years ago. Jingjing is moved when he brings flowers to her grave and sings for her. Jingjing and Haoliang are sent to Weavers’ Hall to spy on Di Jude and Lady Hua. Robbed of his weaver’s spot, Dai Gonggong vents his anger on Xiaowen and gets her injured. Haoliang’s ambush on Dai Gonggong fails. A masked Xiaowen saves him. The pair ends up in danger.
Xiaowen joins the CEO’s Project Zero to learn why young adults won’t procreate. The CEO finds his old boss, the reborn Yiming, in the mortal world. Haoliang is traumatised from seeing Xiaowen die in a lightning strike 30 years ago. Xiaowen tries curing him. Jude gives Haoliang a slipshod lesson and tasks him to weave the evil spirit Jia Chou’s fate. Conflict ensues. Haoliang is nearly reborn.
Xiaowen saves Haoliang in time and is driven out of Weavers’ Hall by Pei Lao, whose mood swings force Haoliang and Jingjing into quitting their spy work. The CEO convinces them to join Project Zero. To help Jingjing sneak into Pei Lao’s secret chamber and install a camera, Haoliang messes up the woven fates and incites a riot. An upset Xiaowen renounces the half-hearted Haoliang as her student.
The CEO blackmails Pei Lao into returning the frozen Lethe Shard and Fate-Changing Bead. A vengeful Pei Lao vows to rid Xiaowen. Haoliang gets Mengpo soup on himself instead of Pei Lao, regressing to an 8-year-old kid mentally. Xiaowen realises she’s wronged Haoliang and they reconcile. He applies himself to weaving. At a party, a jealous Lady Hua pushes Xiaowen, who falls and kisses Haoliang.
To counter Pei Lao’s ploy, the CEO has Yiming convince the residents to reincarnate as pets. A shy Xiaowen avoids a lovestruck Haoliang after the “kiss”. Dai Gonggong tries to kill Xiaowen. Haoliang uses Mengpo soup on him, then brings him to the mortal world. He discovers his cousin plotting a posthumous birth and tries to warn his mother in her dream. Haoliang gets stabbed protecting Xiaowen.
Yiming pens songs to urge residents to reincarnate as pets. Sparks fly when Jingjing learns that he wrote love songs for her. Xiaowen comforts Haoliang who realises two souls got reborn disabled as he ruined their woven fates. He possesses Chenggong to ask his mother to set up a trust for them. Qinqing threatens to leave with his child. When he tries to stop her, he is accused of being a scammer.
With Yiming’s help, Jingjing receives her first burnt offering from her family. Grateful for his chocolates, she knits him a sweater. Pei Lao incites the clans to fight for their rights to be reborn as humans. In turn, the CEO declares they must state their ambitions in their reborn life. Haoren fails to seize the inheritance. His parrot, who is the reborn Jia Chou, helps him fight Haoliang.
Haoliang asks Xiaowen to try on wedding gowns for Lady Hua and fantasises proposing to her. A guilt-ridden Xiaowen realises her fiancé Guanghan has stayed single and cared for her parents for 30 years. Haoliang tries to get Guanghan to move on. Xiaowen is touched. As things between them heat up, Lady Hua accuses Xiaowen of seducing her student and bribes residents into condemning her as immoral.
Xiaowen flees to the mortal world to avoid Haoliang. She decides to be reborn as Guanghan’s daughter to repay him. A demoralised Haoliang finds Xiaowen’s letter and realises her intentions. Once reborn, Xiaowen will no longer be his teacher. They embrace and kiss goodbye, vowing to meet again in 30 years. Haoliang weaves the perfect fate for Xiaowen, which Lady Hua switches out for the worst one.
Pei Lao investigates the CEO’s motive behind population control. The CEO sets up guilinggao shops, pretending it’s for money. A jealous Pei Lao sends Jude to kill Yiming, who helps the CEO become rich. When Jingjing dies saving Yiming, the pair confess their feelings. Pei Shaoqian tricks Yiming into drinking underworld wine. Sneaking to the mortal world, Jingjing is attacked by evil spirits.
Haoliang stops Pei Lao from reducing the lifespan of the reborn and is forced to marry Lady Hua to save himself. He flees to the mortal world, where Xiaowen was born to abusive gamblers. While rebuking Haoren for scamming their father, he kills his parrot. Jia Chou’s spirit appears. Unable to be reborn human, he blames Haoliang, who is given a 20-year sentence. Xiaowen gets sold by her parents.
Niu and Ma cure Yiming and tell Jingjing to return to the underworld in an hour. Jingjing uses a toy to record her confession to Yiming. Yiming wants to go to the underworld to find Jingjing, only to discover Jude killed her. Distraught, he finds her reborn as a puppy. They watch the sunset together. Yiming saves Wanshan from Haoren. Wanshan sets up a trust and helps search for the reborn Xiaowen.
Two decades later, a freed Haoliang goes to the mortal world and finds Xiaowen is now When. He yells at her parents for trying to sell When off again to pay their debts. A disillusioned When severs ties with her parents and thanks Haoliang for his help. She explains she’s named When because she’s always wondered when she will be saved. Haoliang’s heart breaks when he learns of all she’s suffered.
Haoliang urges When to change her fate and use her third eye to help living mothers reconcile with their dead baby’s spirit. When’s acts go viral. Guanghan sees them and realises When shares Xiaowen’s likeness. A spate of pet murders occurs. Haoliang and Yiming fail to lure the murderer out. Unbeknownst to them, the murderer is Dai Gonggong and he’s at the shelter to kill When and Xiaohua.
